The research behind this tool

This tracker is grounded in Christian Roesler's structural dream analysis (SDA), a validated empirical method for categorizing dreams by their narrative pattern rather than their symbolic content. Roesler's research identifies six recurring dream structures that appear across cultures and clinical populations. By classifying your dreams according to these patterns, you can observe how your inner life is organized and whether it shifts over time, particularly during psychotherapy or periods of personal change.

Each dream type reflects a different relationship between the dreaming self and the dream world. Some types position the dreamer as a passive observer; others show active agency and mastery. Tracking which patterns dominate your dream life, and how the balance shifts, provides a concrete measure of psychological movement that complements traditional self-report.

Frequently asked questions

What does a dream journal actually show you?

A pattern-based dream journal reveals the recurring structures in your dreams rather than focusing on individual symbols. Over weeks, you begin to see which dream types dominate and whether your dreaming self tends toward passivity or active engagement. These patterns correlate with measurable psychological states.

How often should I record my dreams?

Record dreams as soon as you wake, before the details fade. Even two or three entries per week produce useful data within a month. Consistency matters more than completeness. A partial record of a dream is better than no record at all.

Is my dream data private?

Completely. The Dream Pattern Tracker stores everything in your browser's local storage. No dream content is transmitted to any server. Your email is collected only to provide access and occasional updates about dream research. The dreams themselves remain on your device.

What are the six dream patterns?

The six types range from passive observation (Type 1) through threat response, performance anxiety, and searching, to relational connection and autonomous action (Type 6). Each reflects a different stance of the dream ego toward its environment. The tracker walks you through classification with a guided decision tree so you do not need prior training.
