Neurodivergence and the Affinity Group

Damian Milton submitted his double-empathy paper to Disability & Society in 2012 from outside the academy, an autistic sociologist arguing that the field's controlling deficit had been measured backwards. Fourteen years later, the question of how neurodivergent adults gather has become a discipline with its own journal, its own methodological literature, and its own internal arguments. This review maps that discipline as it bears on a specific design problem: a closed-cohort, ten-session, pan-neurodivergent affinity group for adults that braids clinical evidence with the liberation pedagogy of Tricia Hersey, Sonya Renee Taylor, and Devon Price, and that treats allies as first-class participants rather than secondary witnesses.

The review proceeds in eight movements. The overview essay traces the field's genealogy and the curriculum's frontier intent through the prose register Brian uses elsewhere on this site. The schools-of-thought document names six positions rather than topics, since the disagreements in this field are about what counts as suffering and what counts as cure, not about which subtopic to study next. The genealogy charts the chronology from Singer 1998 to Flower 2025 with influence lines and paradigm shifts. The tensions document carries the seven design-relevant arguments and the rulings the synthesis recommended. The deep-read dossiers compress six anchor texts into AE-tier-graded summaries. The methodology records query strings, seed criteria, the full fourteen-claim AE-tier table, the five strongest counter-characterizations and how the review absorbed them, and the visible absences that no responsible review can paper over. The frontier document inventories empirical, methodological, and conceptual gaps, then names the curriculum's five candidate contributions. The references page gathers the full APA-7 bibliography.

Overview essay

The field's controlling question, the schools, the genealogy, the unresolved tensions, the curriculum's frontier intent. 3,500 words in academic register.

Schools of thought

Six positions: pathology paradigm, accommodation-affirmation, critical disability studies, autistic phenomenology, liberation pedagogy, mad studies. What each would deny.

Genealogy

1998 Singer thesis to 2025 Flower Delphi. Four paradigm shifts. Suppressed lines: Mel Baggs, Higashida, the AAC-user theorist tradition, the McWade-Milton-Beresford 2015 mad-studies dialogue.

Tensions

Identity-first language, self-diagnosis legitimacy, Baron-Cohen's place in the canon, cure versus accommodation, Mottron's prototypical-autism debate, liberation pedagogy in clinical containers, pan-ND mixed groups. Curriculum-design rulings.

Deep-read dossiers

Milton 2012, Raymaker 2020, Murray-Lesser-Lawson 2005, Chapman 2021/2023, Bottema-Beutel 2021, Flower 2025. Citation, thesis, method, AE-tier, position, critique, what each makes possible.

Methodology

Query strings and timestamps, seed criteria, AE-tier table for fourteen curriculum claims, counter-characterization integration, visible absences.

Frontier and candidate interventions

Empirical, methodological, conceptual gaps. Cross-field bridges. The curriculum's five candidate frontier contributions.

Method in one paragraph

The review combined four Wave-1 reconnaissance agents (Seed Finder, Field Scout, Archive Scout, Bibliographic Mapper) with three Wave-2/3/4 hybrid agents (Tension Mapper with counter-argument scrub, Group-Pedagogy Frontier Locator, Evidence Grader and Deep Reader). Searches ran on Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex; trade-press anchors entered through citation tracing rather than search, because Hersey, Taylor, Price, and Walker do not appear in the standard biomedical indices and would be invisible to a search-only review. Seeds qualified on three criteria: more than one hundred citations within the niche, foundational theoretical statement irrespective of citation count, or community-essential despite low formal citation count. Centrality scoring weighted citation degree against author position (academic, autistic-led, trade-press, AAC-user theorist), publication venue, and year. Clusters were named as positions rather than topics, since this field's clusters disagree with each other rather than describing different parts of the same elephant. Evidence claims were graded on a five-tier autistic-evidence (AE) scale (AE1 strong-RCT-or-MA, AE2 safe-but-hedged, AE3 needs-hedge, AE4 theoretical, AE5 avoid). The curriculum's five candidate contributions were located against the field rather than asserted into it. The full method, including known biases and visible absences, lives at methodology.html.

Frontier intent

The curriculum locates itself at five places where the literature is thin or silent: a first-class-allies architecture (Hirvikoski's PEGASUS includes significant others as supporters but never as protagonists; AANE separates groups by default; no published curriculum gives allies primary speaking time alongside neurodivergent participants), Hersey-Taylor-Price as primary readings woven into a five-part session structure (no published group has done this), pan-neurodivergent shared-core-plus-differentiated-practice design (Dwyer 2024 licenses the trans-diagnostic monotropism move empirically but no ten-session protocol exists), CAT-Q plus ASIS plus MQ intake battery returned to the participant as psychoeducation rather than withheld as clinician-only data, and a facilitator self-audit instrument that integrates Tema Okun's white-supremacy-culture characteristics, bell hooks's engaged pedagogy, and Mia Mingus's access intimacy. None of these is original alone; the integration is. Whether the integration survives empirical contact is the next question, which this review does not answer.

The review's task is finished when the curriculum can be described as a position within a field, defended against its strongest counter-characterizations, and held accountable to its visible absences. The downstream task — writing the ten session MDX files — sits in a separate workstream.
