Today covers five mechanisms in the dopamine loop: reward prediction error, variable ratio reinforcement, receptor downregulation, the adolescent dopamine peak, and the wanting / liking dissociation. Each one is a real circuit with a real lab behind it. None of them are what you think dopamine is.
The phones, the games, the streaks, the crushes — they all hit the same circuit. That circuit was tuned for finding berries and remembering which uncle had the spear. It is currently being pointed at you by an industry of engineers who know more about it than you do. The point of today is to know what they know.
Then we run a myth-bust. Most of what gets said about dopamine on YouTube and in wellness reels is wrong. Some of it is upside down. The rule: commit to myth or fact before the reveal, because prediction is the mechanism — and that is itself one of the five things on today's list.
CONFIDENTIALITY
What is shared here stays here. Names, stories, details, all protected. The only exception is safety.
PASS
You can pass at any point. No explanation needed. If something does not fit right now, say "pass" and we move on.
10 to 12 MINBridge questions
Share your name, then go through these in order. You do not have to give details. Just notice what comes up.
1
What is the last thing you opened your phone to check, where you knew before you looked that probably nothing was there?
No theme yet. Just notice the gap between knowing and checking. That gap is mechanism 1.
2
What is your hottest take on dopamine? The TikTok one. The Huberman one. The "dopamine detox" one. Everything is fair game.
Whatever you bring, we will either confirm with a citation or demolish with one in the next hour. Hot takes are the game.
3
Name one thing you wanted hard for months — and then when you got it, the joy was smaller than the wanting predicted.
There is a name for that gap. Berridge mapped it. It shows up in mechanism 5.
18 to 22 MINSmash a pad to open the mechanism
Each pad is a separate piece of the same loop. Before you open one, predict what is going on inside it. Prediction is the thing that makes the reveal land. That is itself mechanism 1.
ONE MORE THING
These five do not run in parallel. They are one circuit. Prediction error trains the loop. Variable ratio is what keeps it pulling. Downregulation is what the loop costs you. The adolescent peak is the volume knob the rest of your life will not have. And want / like is the gap that lets the loop survive the joy. Every "I just want to check" you have ever felt is all five firing at once.
15 to 18 MINCommit before the reveal
Read each one. Commit to myth or fact before you click. The rule: pick a side, even if you are not sure. Prediction is the mechanism. Most people miss at least two of these.

FINAL SCORE
The ones most people miss: dopamine is not the pleasure chemical (that's wanting, not liking), and "dopamine detox" is not a thing receptors do in 48 hours. If those tripped you up, that is the whole point. The pop-psych version of dopamine is upside down.
12 to 15 MINOpen the chest. Pick the mechanism.
Each chest drops a scene from your week. The loot is random — sometimes a jackpot, sometimes nothing, sometimes a rare. That is the lesson. Then read the scene and pick the mechanism doing the most work. Quick reads, no overthinking. Multiplier climbs while you are hot. Streak resets on a miss. Every scene fires more than one mechanism, so the call is which one fires first and hardest.

PICK THE MECHANISM
FINAL SCORE
Notice what just happened. You opened ten chests. Some gave you jackpots, some gave you nothing. You kept clicking anyway. That is variable ratio on you, in real time. Now imagine that loop with sixteen waking hours of your phone, instead of ten of mine. The engineers know what they are doing. So do you, now.
10 to 12 MINOpen it up
Take these wherever the room goes. You do not have to answer every one.
THE GAP
Name one thing you wanted hard for months. When you finally got it, was the joy as big as the wanting? If not, what does that gap tell you about which circuit was driving the wanting?
Berridge: wanting and liking are different neural systems. The gap is the lesson.
THE PULL
What in your life works on variable ratio? Phone notifications, crushes texting back, loot boxes, slot pulls, "maybe today" content. Which one has the strongest grip, and what does the schedule of when it pays off actually look like?
THE BAR MOVING
What used to feel like enough that does not anymore? A song, a snack, a video game, a person's attention. Receptor downregulation is the mechanism. The thing did not get worse. Your baseline moved.
This one tends to land hard. Let it.
THE PEAK
Your reward system is louder right now than it will ever be again. Galván's data: dopamine reactivity peaks in adolescence, closes around 25. What is that volume good for, and what is it bad for? What would you do differently if you actually believed it was temporary?
THE LOOP SURVIVES THE JOY
If you can crave something you do not even enjoy anymore, what does that say about whether craving is a reason to act? Where is the loop running you, and where are you running it?
If someone brings up something real, sit with it. These circuits explain things that have felt personal and confusing for years. That lands differently than abstract discussion.
5 MINPick one experiment
One experiment between now and next session. Not all of them. Pick the one that hooked your attention most, and commit to noticing specifically.
NAME THE PULL
Once a day, when you open your phone and notice the urge with nothing specific behind it, say out loud: "variable ratio." Naming the mechanism while it is happening is the first move toward not running on it.
PREDICT BEFORE YOU LOOK
Before opening a notification or refreshing a feed, predict what will be there. Watch how often you are wrong. The prediction error is the hit. If the prediction is right, the dopamine flattens. Boredom by accuracy.
WANT vs. LIKE LOG
For three days, after any "I just want to check" moment, ask one question afterward: did I actually like that, or did I just want it? Notice the gap. The point is not to stop. The point is to see.
RAISE THE BASELINE
Pick one slow thing that used to be enough — a walk without earbuds, a meal without a screen, a conversation without checking. Do it once this week. Receptors recover by absence, not by replacement.
USE THE PEAK
Your reward system is at peak volume right now. Point it at one thing this week you actually want to learn — a riff, a move, a skill, a section of a book. The same circuit that hands the phone the loop will hand a real skill the same loop, if you aim it.
One sentence checkout
Before you go, one takeaway and one specific plan. Specific means naming when, where, and what will be different. "I will use my phone less" is not a plan. "Friday on the bus home I am going to predict what's in the group chat before I open it" is a plan.
FACILITATOR NOTE
Push for specificity. Vague plans do not reinforce. If a teen says "I will be more aware of my dopamine," reflect the vagueness and ask for a when, where, and what. That refusal to accept the first version is itself a form of respect.
