Different Defaults
A standalone session on the variation that human nervous systems run on. Open to autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, and otherwise neurodivergent adults, allies, and people still figuring out the word for what they are.
What this is
A one-hour conversation about variation. Not a skills group, not a process group, not a remediation. The frame is that human nervous systems run on different defaults, and the fit between a default and an environment determines a great deal of what a day costs and what it gives back. The conversation stays in the structure rather than the story.
Pan-ND. Autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic, OCD, Tourettic, plural, traumagenic, and people whose nervous systems do not yet have an accepted noun. Allies welcome. Curiosity is a legitimate seat. No diagnosis required at the door. The room treats neurodivergence as variation in the human nervous system, with cost located in the friction between body and environment rather than inside the body alone (Walker 2014, 2021).
What's shared here stays here. Names, stories, details, all of it is protected. The only exception is safety.
You can pass at any point. No explanation needed. If something does not fit right now, say "pass" and we move on. Cameras are optional. The chat is a full channel, not a backup.
One sentence
Around the room. One sentence. Pick the prompt that is easiest today. The point is to put a voice in the room, not to disclose anything heavier than the prompt asks for.
Three prompts, one sentence each, members pick the one that is easiest. Resist filling silence in the opener — pauses are processing time. If a participant has only typed in chat, read what they wrote aloud yourself rather than asking them to speak it. Do not editorialize ("oh that's such a good one") and do not collapse answers into themes. Each contribution gets registered as data the room is now holding.
Variation, not a single line
The lay model of neurodivergence treats it as one axis: typical on one end, atypical on the other. The research model does not. Human nervous systems vary across several mostly-independent dimensions, each with a range, and a given person sits somewhere different on each one. The shape across the dimensions is what makes a profile, and the profile is what meets the environment.
The empirical literature on this is uneven. Some constructs are well-replicated and instrumented; others are theoretically rich but contested. The room uses the constructs as descriptive language, not as diagnostic claims. The point is to have a vocabulary for the variation that already runs in the room, not to assign anyone to a category.
Across the dimensions discussed in the next panel, population data shows continuous distribution with long tails on both ends. The clinical thresholds (autism diagnosis, ADHD diagnosis, sensory-processing disorder, high-sensitivity classification) draw a line at a level of difference that is impairing in a specific environment. The line moves when the environment moves. A nervous system that runs cleanly in a research library can run hot in an open-plan office without the nervous system having changed.
The clinical pivot here is that the unit of analysis is the fit, not the body. The body has the defaults it has. The fit between defaults and demand is where the work lives.
A spiky profile means high capacity in one domain coexists with low capacity in another, in the same person, in the same week. A person who can hold a sixty-page technical document in working memory may not be able to follow a four-step verbal instruction in a noisy room. A person who can read a stranger's microexpression in two seconds may not be able to read the social rules of a meeting they have been in for six months.
The lay reading of spiky profiles is that the capacities cancel out and produce an average. The clinical reading is that each spike and each trough is a real fact about a real nervous system, and the work is to use the spikes where they fit and to scaffold the troughs where they do not. Averaging the profile loses the data the profile contains.
Damian Milton's 2012 paper named what the clinical literature had been calling a deficit on one side a mismatch on two sides. When a person on one default communicates with a person on a different default, the misreading runs in both directions. The autistic adult and the non-autistic adult misread each other at roughly the same rate. The rapport problem is in the gap between defaults, not inside one nervous system. Crompton and colleagues (2020) replicated the effect: information transfer is better within neurotype than across it, in both directions.
The room uses double empathy to keep the framing symmetric. The conversation is not about how one default needs to be repaired to look more like another. It is about how defaults meet, and what happens at the seam.
The framework panel is the lightest theoretical lift of the hour. Do not over-teach it. The work is in the next two panels. If participants want sources, the named constructs are: monotropism (Murray, Lesser, Lawson 2005), sensory profile (Dunn 1997), high-sensitivity research (Aron 1997, Acevedo 2014), double empathy (Milton 2012, Crompton 2020), spiky profile (common usage in autistic-community literature; see Walker 2021).
Dimensions on which nervous systems vary
Four constructs the room will use for the rest of the hour. Each one is a range, not a category. Each one is mostly independent of the others. The point of naming them is to have a shared vocabulary for the variation that already runs in the room, not to slot anyone into a type.
The shape your attention takes by default. Monotropic attention pools deeply in one channel and is reluctant to leave. Polytropic attention distributes shallowly across many channels and is reluctant to commit. Most nervous systems have a preferred shape and can flex modestly with effort; the cost of flexing is the recovery debt afterward.
Monotropic systems do their best work in long uninterrupted blocks; switching is expensive. Polytropic systems do their best work where the demand is breadth; depth requires deliberate scaffolding. Neither shape is more functional in the abstract. The functionality is set by the demand of the environment.
The amount of incoming signal your nervous system passes through to conscious processing. A low-filter system receives more of the room: the fluorescent hum, the seam of the shirt, the conversation three tables away. A high-filter system receives less and runs cleanly in noisier environments. Most nervous systems run different filters in different modalities; sound and proprioception are commonly mismatched.
Sensory threshold is not a preference and it is not training. The phenomenology of a sound, a light, a fabric, a smell, a flicker, is not constant across nervous systems. Two people in the same room are in different rooms.
The level of activation your body runs at when nothing in particular is happening. Different baselines need different scaffolding to do the same task. A high-baseline system arrives at a meeting already at the activation level the meeting requires and can drop into focus immediately. A low-baseline system needs a ramp.
Arousal is also where the body keeps the cost of mismatched defaults. A nervous system that has been running translation work for hours arrives at the end of the day at a baseline its owner did not consent to. The shape of the day shows up in the body at six in the evening, in language that is not always available to name.
The shape of how information gets metabolized once it arrives. A deep-narrow system stays with a topic for hours or days, returns to it under the shower, and produces a finished thought slowly. A shallow-wide system moves across many topics quickly, builds connections across domains, and produces finished thoughts in bursts. Both shapes are functional; the rhythm sets the relationship to time.
This is the default most commonly misread as a moral trait. The deep-narrow person is read as obsessive; the shallow-wide person is read as scattered. Neither reading is accurate. Each is a description of a processing rhythm meeting an environment that does not match it.
The four defaults are deliberately broad. Resist the move to add a fifth or sixth dimension live; the room loses traction past four. If a participant wants to name a dimension that is not here (interoception, motor planning, language modality, social cognition), affirm that the four are a sampling, not a complete model, and hold the additional dimension for closing or for a future session.
Locate one default
Not a diagnostic. A map. Pick one of the four defaults from the previous panel. Locate yourself on its range, in whatever language fits. Then describe one setting in which that default fits the demand and one in which it does not. The point is to put the construct in contact with the actual texture of your week.
Pick the default that is most legible to you today. Attention, sensory bandwidth, arousal baseline, processing rhythm. There is no right pick. The legible one is the one to start with because the data is already there.
Locate yourself on the range. Not a number. A phrase. "I run monotropic in the deep middle of the range." "My sensory bandwidth is low filter on sound, high filter on touch." "My arousal baseline runs low until evening." "My processing rhythm is deep-narrow with occasional bursts." Whatever phrasing fits the actual shape.
Name one setting in which that default fits the demand. The structural conditions, not the qualities of the people in the setting. What is the demand asking for, and how does your default supply it?
Name one setting in which the same default does not fit. Again, the structural conditions. What is the demand asking for that your default does not supply, and what work do you do to close the gap?
If a participant resists the map by saying "I don't know which default to pick," offer the easier reframe: pick the one you complain about most often, or the one most often complimented. The complaint and the compliment are the same dimension viewed from two environments. The map is the same exercise.
Do not require participants to map all four defaults in the room. One is enough for the hour. Members will map the others on their own over the following days, and the second-order pattern across defaults is a useful focus for the closing.
Open prompts
Pick the question that is easiest to enter. The point is not to answer all five. The point is to stay in the structure of the defaults rather than the autobiography of how you found out you had them.

One small move between now and the next time. Not a transformation. One observation, one named accommodation, one structural change at the seam.
One sentence
Around the room. One sentence. The default you are leaving the room more curious about than you arrived with. No conclusion required. Curiosity is enough.
Closing prompts often produce a delayed register in this room. The hour lands later in the week, when a participant catches a moment of fit or a moment of translation and finds the language for it. Do not push for a clean takeaway in the checkout. Curiosity, named, is the deliverable.
