STUB — Brief CBT-based protocol developed by Barry Krakow. Patient writes out the recurring nightmare, rewrites it changing whatever element they choose (constraint: new version cannot reproduce the threat), and rehearses the new version in waking imagination daily. Across two to four weeks the original nightmare typically reduces in frequency.
How many sessions does IRT take?
STUB — typically 4 to 6 sessions.
Does IRT work for non-trauma nightmares?
STUB — most effective for trauma-replay nightmares; smaller effects on developmental-relational driver because the structural source is not addressed by changing content.
Is IRT recommended by clinical guidelines?
STUB — yes; American Academy of Sleep Medicine first-line for nightmare disorder.
Can I do IRT on my own?
STUB — clinician guidance produces stronger results, particularly for trauma-related nightmares where dysregulation can spike during the rewrite.
